Little ten-year-old Abigail Bruce from Weiner, Arkansas recently celebrated her birthday and was given an adorable pet goat, Speedy. Her dad Nick wasn’t entirely happy with the arrival of the pet and wasn’t particularly excited.
“I didn’t approve of him at first,” Nick said. “But he’ll be here from now on.”
A couple of days later, Nick definitely hasn’t regretted the decision to bring Speedy into their home and family. In turns out that Speedy was an absolutely lifesaver and saved the life of Abigail, and may very well have saved the entire family as well.
This past Saturday, Abigail decided to bring Speedy into the living room for the night and they both slept there. In the middle of the night, Abigail was woken up by Speedy as he jumped over her legs and her chest.
Abigail spoke to the local WREG TV: “I was thinking, what’s happening? And all I had seen was smoke.”
Immediately afterward, she ran to her parents’ bedroom to warn them as well. “She said it was smoky and she could hardly breathe,” her dad Nick said. “She said she thought it was hailing outside but when I got up to check, it was the fire that was coming around the outside window.”
The garage of the family home was burning in flames, but the entire family was able to escape to the front lawn by jumping out of the bedroom window. The local fire department arrived mere minutes later and was quickly able to extinguish the fire. However, the damage had already been done, as practically everything in the place was severely damaged.
“He knew what to do and everything,” Abigail told WREG TV. “I think he was special before we got him.”
An investigation occurred and it’s believed that an electrical issue was the cause of the fire outbreak.
For now, the Bruce family will be staying over at a friend’s house until they can get a roof over their heads again. Speedy is also being taken care of, as another friend’s barn still had plenty of room for Speedy to live in.
As for Abigail, she thinks that Speedy is the best birthday present ever. “I’m glad we got it before the fire happened or we wouldn’t be here,” she concluded.
