Glowing Pasta for Kids

In DIY Crafts, Fan Submission, Kids by Guest Poster0 Comments

My kids love to play and explore with things that glow in the dark!  Rosie has been really into making jewelry lately as well.  With these two things in mind I was inspired to create a way for my girls to make glow-in-the-dark jewelry.  This ended up being a really fun activity that led to tons of fun and exciting ways to play!

Kids can play with this easy to make pasta in so many ways, and the noodles can be stored and then used for play again and again!  My kids have had a blast with this simple play material; are you ready to make your own?
Materials
Note:  For the best effect you will want to use a blacklight for this activity. My girls love using these super cool flashlights.  We also have a blacklight fixture that we often use.  If using a blacklight I also recommend these uv-safety glasses.  My girls love wearing them, and they will protect kids eyes if (or shall we say when) they shine the lights at each other.

You can use any noodle for this activity, but keep in mind that you will need pasta noodles that can be threaded to make jewelry.
Method
  • Begin by placing the desired amount of pasta in a bag, using one bag for each color of noodles that you wish to make
  • Add a squirt of neon paint to the bag along with 1 teaspoon of water.  Seal the bag and mix until all ingredients are combined and the pasta noodles are saturated in color

  • Open the bag(s) and leave them to dry for 4-6 hours

  • Once dry, play can begin!  You may want to break apart the noodles in the bag a little before pouring them into a play bin or container

Extend the Fun
Give kids these super cool flashlights, and then have them head outside to play glow-in-the-dark tag.  The pasta necklaces will GLOW and help the kids to find each other.
Tips & Storage:  Your glowing pasta noodles can be used again and again! Store any leftover noodles in a bin or container between play times, and then just pull them out when it’s time to play!

This is the paint we use in our activities.  These are the flashlights that we have.  We have lots of other ideas using these flashlights, too!  Be sure to follow us on Pinterest so that you don’t miss them!
