With all the media attention to the Harvey Weinstein scandal, accusers coming forward and other people being exposed for also allegedly being abusers, it seems as though the door is opening to the just under the surface simmering culture of harassment.
And one can see in the coverage great hope that things might be changing.
But at least in one case, things don’t appear to have changed. And once again, the fact that the person may have been guilty of sexual crimes is less important than that he has the right leftist pedigree.
Peter Yarrow was one of the founding members of the 1960s folk group Peter, Paul and Mary. Always far left, he nevertheless made beautiful music with his partners. One of his most famous songs that he co-wrote was ‘Puff the Magic Dragon.’
He was well-known for being involved in protest actions, such as the March on the Pentagon in 1967 against the war in Vietnam, which he just celebrated the 50th anniversary of with about 100 others.
But he wasn’t just the peace and love hippie he projected himself to be.
According to the Free Beacon, he was convicted in the 1970’s of “making sexual advances” on a 14-year-old girl.
Yarrow went to prison after making sexual advances on a 14-year-old girl and her 17-year-old sister in 1970 when they went to his Washington, D.C. hotel room to ask for his autograph, according to the New York Post. Yarrow pleaded guilty to taking “indecent liberties” with the 14-year-old and spent only three months behind bars.
The performer was pardoned by President Jimmy Carter on his last day in office in 1981.
Did this stop him from being embraced by liberal circles? Not at all.
Yarrow has extensive ties within liberal circles: he sang at John Kerry’s 1995 wedding, performed at Occupy Wall Street for protesters, and performed for Barack Obama’s campaign. Yarrow is also godfather to one of Kerry’s children.
He traveled to Vietnam to “apologize” on behalf of the United States in 2005 for America’s participation in the Vietnam War.
Convicted of child sex abuse, and made the godfather of Kerry’s child? Wow. And of course, Obama was perfectly fine with using him for his campaign.
But are things even any different now, A.W. (After Weinstein)?
Nope, at least not in this case.
Yarrow will perform on Friday at a rally organized by the nonprofit Code Pink: Women for Peace.
The Code Pink protest is called “Divest from the War Machine” and Yarrow will perform at the “U.S. responsibility for the legacies of war” vigil.
Over the years, the performer has repeatedly made excuses for his behavior in 1970. “You feel terrible about it, make your amends,’’ he told the Baltimore Jewish Times in 2006. “In that time, it was common practice, unfortunately – the whole groupie thing.’’
It was common to take advantage of your groupies? And take ‘sexual liberties’ with a 14-year-old?
Really? Then please speak more and reveal the other adult males besides yourself who were pigs and took advantage of impressionable and adoring child fans.
Because if that’s normal, there’s a far bigger problem that hasn’t been addressed yet.
