Disney just released the teensiest, tiniest sneak peak at the upcoming Mary Poppins Returns — and it is allllll kinds of supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
For those of you feeling a bit worried about Disney bringing back some very iconic characters — take comfort in knowing that Mary Poppins Returns is faaaaar from a remake.
It revisits grown-up siblings Jane and Michael Banks, who now have children of their own, and are dealing with the aftermath of a family tragedy. Thankfully, Mary Poppins returns to the scene, bringing with her a whole lot of joy, comfort, and childhood magic.
Oh, and apparently Julie Andrews has already given the film her blessing — so we have complete faith.
“She had known it was in the works, then we said, ‘We’re doing it,’ and she said, ‘Oh, thank God,’” Rob Marshall, who is directing the sequel, told Entertainment Weekly. “Then we said, ‘And we’re thinking of Emily Blunt,’ and she just threw her hands up in the air and said yes. I think a lot of people feel that way about Emily’s work.”
And here we thought we couldn’t love her anymore than we already do.
“Julie was incredibly gracious, and we talked about it in a very general way but she made it clear right up front,” Marshall explained “She said, ‘This is Emily’s show, and I really want it to be Emily’s show. I don’t want it to be, ‘Oh, here comes that Mary Poppins.’ I don’t want that. I really want her to take this and run with it, because she will be brilliant.’”
Fans of the original film, never fear though — there will be some cameo goodness. We’ll be getting an appearance from Dick Van Dyke, who told Entertainment Tonight that he couldn’t miss the opportunity to come on board.
“I get to do a little song and dance number,” Van Dyke said. “I gotta be a part of it.”
We cannot WAIT to see him back in the Poppins world. Plus, he’ll be joining an all-star cast, including Meryl Streep, Julie Walters, Angela Lansbury, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Which is to say, Christmas 2018 can’t come soon enough.
