Cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) is a compound found in marijuana and known for its medicinal potential.  According to a study done by researchers fromTel Aviv University and Hebrew University and published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, it helps heal broken bones and strengthen them, without providing any psychotropic effect.

“We found that CBD alone makes bones stronger during healing, enhancing the maturation of the collagenous matrix, which provides the basis for new mineralization of bone tissue,” researcher Yankel Gabet said. “After being treated with CBD, the healed bone will be harder to break in the future.”

The team of researchers imposed mild femoral fractures , then administered CBD in some of them and CBD plus tetrahydrocannabinol (THC, the ingredient that causes the marijuana high) in others.  Then, they assessed the healing, making a comparison between the rat who received marijuana chemicals and the ones that didn’t.

It was fond that the ones injected with CBD had the exact result whether or not it was used along with THC.

“We found CBD alone to be sufficiently effective in enhancing fracture healing,” Gabet said.

“Other studies have also shown CBD to be a safe agent, which leads us to believe we should continue this line of study in clinical trials to assess its usefulness in improving human fracture healing.”

This study actually confirmed earlier findings that the body contains receptors which respond to cannabinoid compounds and that they aren’t restrained by the brain.

“We only respond to cannabis because we are built with intrinsic compounds and receptors that can also be activated by compounds in the cannabis plant,” Gabet explained.

The earlier study has shown that the skeleton contains cannabinid receptors which trigger bone formation and stop bone loss. The recent study confirms these findings.

This study is one of the many done on the topic, specifically the benefits of CBD.  The findings might lead to further research into ways that marijuana could be utilized to treat bone diseases and osteoporosis.

“The clinical potential of cannabinoid-related compounds is simply undeniable at this point,” Gabet said.

“While there is still a lot of work to be done to develop appropriate therapies, it is clear that it is possible to detach a clinical therapy objective from the psychoactivity of cannabis. CBD, the principal agent in our study, is primarily anti-inflammatory and has no psychoactivity.”

The list of benefits to marijuana seems endless, though.  It is now utilized for chronic pain, to improve appetite in patients with AIDS, and to reduce the side effect of chemotherapy. It has been also shown to slow down the progression of HIV and to keep blood sugar levels in check.

Multiple studies have shown that it also kills off leukemia cells, inhibits the metastasis of various aggressive cancers, and suppresses seizures.

A study done in 2013 and published in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology revealed that CBD is as effective as the drug used to treat paranoia and schizophrenia, without the negative side effects.  Other studies have also shown that it works as safe antipsychotic.
